Crewe North – David Simcox and Roger Morris

Welcome to Crewe North

“Welcome! I’m David Simcox, and I’m proud to be working alongside Cllr Roger Morris to help make Crewe North and Central stronger, safer, and better for everyone who lives here.

From Undewood Lane to Nutfield Avenue, Mclarren Street to Bradfield Road, Sandown Road, Frank Bott Avenue to Holland Street, and all the roads and communities in between – we are all part of Crewe North.

We are committed to working for local residents to tackle issues from underfunding such as potholes, litter, fly-tipping, parking problems, street lighting, and anti-social behaviour to make our area better.

Myself and Roger have lived in Crewe all our lives, We have always called the West End of Crewe our home. We are both deeply committed to our community. We see firsthand the challenges we face, and believe that together, we can turn things around.

During David’s time as a Citizens Advice Bureau advisor, I helped people through difficult times, providing benefit checks, debt advice, and court liaison services. This experience taught him the importance of support and advocacy.

My Commitment

  • Financial Stability: Our council faces a potential budget deficit of £12.8 million. As business owners, We understand the importance of spending resources wisely, avoiding waste, and budgeting correctly. Your vote can help prioritise spending where it matters most to you and your family.
  • Education Improvement: Several schools in Crewe have been rated “Requires Improvement” by Ofsted. Our children deserve better, and we need to ensure this trend does not affect other schools in Crewe North and Crewe Central. We will advocate for better funding and resources to ensure our children receive the quality education they deserve.
  • Waste Management: The Labour council’s proposal for three-weekly bin collections is a serious concern. This decision risks increased rat infestations and other health hazards. We will stand up against this impractical proposal and fight for regular waste collections to ensure our community remains clean and safe.
  • Housing Developments: Labour’s plan to reduce planning restrictions and increase housing will strain our already stretched services. We have worked tirelessly to make the Coppenhall Place Estate safer and better for all residents, advocating for better management and stricter enforcement of pre-conditions.

🕯️ Dangerously Dark Around the Crewe Lifestyle Centre

For months now, the lights around the building and the steps leading to the Dunelm car park have been out. Staff at the centre have already treated people who’ve tripped and been hurt, and the police have reported more anti-social behaviour and groups gathering in the area after dark.

It’s been like this since August. Several people and agencies have reported it, yet nothing has been done. We’ve been told it might be down to a dispute over who owns or maintains the lights, but that’s no excuse when people’s safety is at risk.

I’ve asked for a clear answer on who’s responsible, when the lights will be fixed, and what can be done in the meantime to make the area safer, such as temporary lighting or patrols.

People using the centre deserve to feel safe walking to and from it, not left in total darkness. This needs sorting quickly.

I’ll keep you all updated once I have a full response.

🏗️ Crewe Town Centre. The Hard Truth Over recent months, many residents have been asking: “What’s really happening with Crewe’s town centre?” David Simcox recently submitted questions to Cheshire East Council to get straight answers about what the “regeneration” really means for Crewe. We’re sharing the council’s written responses here so everyone can see the same information and understand what’s planned. (Cllr Roger Morris was not involved in submitting these questions.) 🚗 1️⃣ The £11 million car park, the project that started it all The multi-storey car park was built years ago for a development that never happened. The council admits it was part of a failed scheme and is currently loss-making and underused. They now say it will eventually replace Chester Street and Delamere Street car parks, both of which are full most days. But there’s no new parking study yet to prove the multi-storey can cope once hundreds of new homes are built around it. That study will only happen after new planning applications come forward. So, in effect, the council plans to remove car parks first and check if the new one can handle it later. It’s easy to see why so many people in Crewe think it’s a £11 million white elephant, a car park built for a town centre that doesn’t yet exist. 🏘️ 2️⃣ What the “new town centre” actually means This is the part most people don’t realise. The council’s official wording calls it a “housing-led regeneration scheme”, around 300 new homes in the town centre, with small shops, offices, or community spaces below them. That means the Crewe of the future won’t be a town centre like Liverpool, Chester, or even how Crewe once was. The big retail dream has gone, the council’s new strategy is to build homes first, hoping that cafés and small shops will follow. In effect it will be like Nantwich Road, West Street and Edleston Road. So if anyone is expecting a new shopping hub full of big stores, that simply isn’t the vision anymore. 💷 3️⃣ Why housing first, not shops or leisure? The council says large retail or leisure projects aren’t “viable”, meaning no developer will take them on. Housing is seen as the only thing that currently attracts investment, and they believe once people live in the centre, other businesses might follow later. It’s a gamble, build the homes and hope the rest comes. ⚠️ 4️⃣ Financial risk Even this scheme depends on millions from Homes England to fill what the council calls a “significant viability gap.” If that funding falls through, the council admits the project “may not be delivered.” That could leave us facing another half-finished site, something Crewe has sadly seen before. 🔒 5️⃣ Transparency Much of the detail remains hidden in “Part 2” confidential papers. Even the Chamber of Commerce hasn’t seen everything yet. The council says residents will be consulted once the developer is formally engaged, but right now, we’re being asked to take a lot on trust. ⚖️

A quick note of thanks to Start Well at The Wishing Well for all their incredible work with local children. It was a real pleasure to support this project through my business, Discounted Cleaning Supplies, and to see the new kit being put to good use. Roger Morris wasn’t able to be there on this occasion, but both of us are proud to back the fantastic work being done.
The dedication and hard work from the Start Well at The Wishing Well team is second to none, and it’s fantastic to see the difference being made for children in our area.

Tonight we challenged Cheshire East Council at the Economy & Growth Committee over their plans to turn the Royal Arcade site, Chester Street and Delamere Street car parks into a 300-home housing estate. 🏘️

We promised to be open with residents – so here are the 7 questions we put on the record:

1️⃣ Parking and Access – The £11m multi-storey 🅿️ was built for the failed Peveril scheme, not to replace Chester and Delamere. It’s already loss-making and underused. What evidence is there it will really cope once 300 more homes are added?

2️⃣ Strategic Direction – Turning Crewe town centre into a housing estate is not regeneration, it’s surrender. ❌🏙️ Is the council redefining the town centre as residential, instead of a retail and leisure hub?

3️⃣ True Regeneration – Regeneration has to mean shops, offices and life in the town centre 🏬👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 – not just housing dropped on top of a failed car park. How will this scheme guarantee those wider benefits?

4️⃣ Sequencing – We’ve seen failed schemes before for example Peveril (2021). 📉 Why build 300 homes before delivering shops, offices and leisure? Isn’t this putting the cart before the horse? 🐴🛒

5️⃣ Financial Risk – The council’s own report admits there’s a “viability gap” 💷 that depends on millions from Homes England. If that fails, will residents end up footing the bill through higher council tax 💸 or service cuts?

6️⃣ Transparency – Much of the detail is hidden in Part 2 confidential papers 🔒. The Chamber supports the idea, but even they haven’t seen the full facts. How can anyone’s support be fully informed without transparency?

7️⃣ Legal Barriers – The council’s own title review found restrictive covenants ⚖️ on the central car park land. Have these been resolved, and if not, could they delay or even block redevelopment?

Crewe has been let down too many times before. 😔 Residents deserve straight answers, not another half finished scheme or more broken promises.

We’ll share the council’s responses once they are available. 📢
